For the price, this thing is worth it just for reading e-books - bearing in mind that it can also download new ebooks for you, as it has good internet accessibility. It's about the size of a largeish paperback, and a similar weight. It's got "solid" memory, so no whirring hard drive to heat up and break if you're rough with it. Compare this, which can read almost any format of e-book, to something like Sony e-reader or Kindle, which cost more and have a fraction of the functionality, and there's no contest unless you're really keen on "e-ink". Personally I prefer the tft screen, as I find the backlighting useful in an e-book reader. You can take this little dude to bed with you, read ebooks (including in colour), surf the web, listen to MP3s on headphones, and also have the advantage of a full office suite and a wide range of games (it will run either XP or Linux, both of which give you a lot more than the limited operating systems on e-book readers). So far it seems robust, a very convenient size, a good price, versatile (you can extend the memory) and good quality. It has USB 2.0 sockets, so you can also plug in a DVD drive and watch full videos on it, assuming you've got WinDVD or other suitable software. It hasn't played up and is about as idiot-proof as these things get. Thoroughly recommended!

What a fab and cute little wonder! And what a doddle. All set up and surfing the net within 5 minutes, yes that's right, only 5 measly mins!
As an added bonus it arrived with Windows XP, I was expecting something I'd never heard of called 'Linux'. Comes with full instructions AND a 'quickstart' guide. However, as I hate reading instructions, and only do so as a last resort, I simply turned it on and, hey presto, there were these wondrous 'first time user' easy peasy step by step instructions.
Would probably not do as your main computer . I was a tad concerned the keyboard would be too small for comfort, but it's fine.[A modern Tolstoy would get frustrated tapping out 'War and Peace' on it] but it's a fab extra. It's perfectly portable but also fabulous as an extra PC for around the house. No more waiting for someone else to finish their emails or treating themselves to something else from Amazon [that would be me!] just fetch this little wonder from your handbag, briefcase [or maybe pocket!] and away you go.

If you need to access the internet easily with a very portable device then get an Eee PC. The netbook is small but perfectly formed (about the size of two DVD cases stacked together) but boots up in twenty seconds, shows available wireless networks in under a minute and is ready to go seconds later. It includes stereo speakers, a web-cam and microphone and a SD card slot and has an Ethernet socket and three USB2 ports which allow files to be transferred between a PC and the Eee, either over a network or with a USB memory stick, and worked on using the complete Open Office suite supplied which will accept Word documents and Excel spreadsheets.
The operating system is a version of Linux called Xandros which is icon based and far more intuitive than using Windows. Over fifty open source applications are preloaded including the Firefox web browser, Thunderbird email, Skype, Google, games, utilities and learning programs with over three thousand more available by download from Asus.I have used the Eee to send and receive emails, watch iPlayer and YouTube, play MP3s and show digital photographs. Almost everything you can do on a PC you can do on an Eee, except play CDs or DVDs directly. Battery life is around two hours when using wifi and the machine comes with a mains charger and a soft sleeve case to keep it safe. Highly recommended.

Brilliant. Up and running when it arrived within 5 minutes on our home network (BT Home Hub)- although I had to charge it for 8 hours first !
All I really wanted was a light truly portable machine with a quick boot. < 20 secs
WhatAsus Eee PC 701 SD-BLK024L 7-inch Netbook, Linux Preloaded, 512MB RAM, 8GB SSD (Black) I got was a really useful "PC" with word processor etc etc. ability to stream and download radio (not tried on TV yet).
My only gripe - a little one - is it's not easy to drop down to the Unix although i understand there is a relacement shell you can download if you can find it. Also it can be difficult to get new version of browsers. I'm still waiting to download the latest firefox which has a zoomable screen.
Nearly forgot the webcam !

Great little device, perfect for travel. Shame about the as-delivered OS. Luckily, dead easy to replace, I shoved Eeebuntu on it (never done it before, took about 30 mins), lovely. Upped the RAM to 2Gb and shoved an 8Gb SD card in it, too. Main reason for changing OS: as-delivered OS (Xandros) was not connecting to my BT HomeHub using WPA. Eeebuntu dead easy (all instructions off www) job done.
