 "Screen Died" 2009-10-12

I loved using the EEE pc until the screen died and am waiting now for a replacement. Pity. Hope this doesn`t occur with my new one. Would liked to have given more stars as it is a great pc.

Worked great for a week, and was a really nice little PC to use, but then the screen completely died so it had to be returned. Not sure if mine was an unfortunate isolated case or a more common fault.

I would have given 5 stars had the fault not occurred.

This is a beautiful piece of kit with high build quality and an attractive appearance. The XP operating system fires up quickly and it picks up my wifi instantly from rest. It is easy to use all over the house or on the move. I have large hands and poor eyesight but I have no problems with the screen or keyboard, provided I am careful to keep away from the very sensitive touchpad while typing. Battery life is about 5.5 hours with wifi or slightly less with mobile broadband.

 "OK but not great" 2009-02-02
By bluebird (Manchester, UK)
I got this to take to Russia for 2 weeks. Since I was meeting up with someone there I wouldn't be able to communicate with except by writing, I thought this would be a good way to communicate. However, it sucked for this. My friend could not type well on it because it kept screwing up.. maybe because of jerking, movement, from being on trains or on laps. One of us would be typing on it and then it would switch away from the word processor. This shouldn't happen on a machine that is designed to be portable.

The touch pad is not very good. Can be hard to use for this reason. Slow, not very sensitive, easily doesn't work if your fingers are sweating. The touchpad buttons are too hard to press for easy use. Not good at all.

Battery life is good but no way is it 6 hours. More like 3 hours maybe, max, if using it. They should be more realistic about battery life in their advertising imo.

It's quite heavy, too, really. A solid chunk. Even so, I would not personally go for a smaller screen size because even with 10", that is kind of small for use. It fit into my (big) handbag but took up too much room and weight for my liking. I had to put the charger in my luggage.

I wish it had a DVD drive. You have to buy an external DVD drive to use DVDS.

Otherwise, it powers up quite quickly and runs well and it withstood travelling around Russia with some mildly rough handling.

The wireless is good, automatic, and picks up routers though I only got to use it for internet in one hotel (wifi often isn't available or you need to pay or get passwords.. ugh, not easy).

I can't really see myself using this much more... and a bigger screen would be better for a spare computer. I don't really think it's worth the price but for someone who will always use it set on a flat and still surface and does mostly use it for internet browsing, then this will be good for you.

By Mr. G. A. Wise (Chichester)
Machine is good bright screen and fast start. The screen is not normal 1024 x 768 but can be squashed to that mode. I found Yahoo e-mail moaned about the video size but continued to work. The internet works well and was proved with free months antivirus NOD32 so was up and running on my home wifi in minutes. The battery life is about 4 hours good but can't get the claimed life personally. It comes with a soft simple case which is OK but not provide enough protection for air travel. I am pleased generally but the shift key on the righthand side takes some getting used to. Upgrade the ram to 2GB made little difference.

 "Excellent value" 2008-09-17
By amazon junkie (Bedfordshire, Britain.)
I feel a bit mean giving it only 4 stars as all the preceding reviews gave it full marks, but I am very pleased with it overall.

It's good points? Well it is small and light while still feeling robust - you tend to take it out and about more often than you do a laptop because it's not so much of a hassle. Firing up from cold is very quick, as is locking onto a wi-fi connection. There is plenty of useful software installed - the office features seem every bit as good as Microsoft - and the photo and video software seem to cope with anything I have needed so far.

It's bad points - well, yes it is small and fiddly and that affects the speed with which you can use it - scrolling across the screen on web pages gets annoying - you could reduce the size of the pages to fit but then you would have trouble reading them. Linux is not quite as intuitive for those of us brought up on Windows, but I'm getting used to it. You might think that with no moving parts battery life would be better than a full size laptop, but it isn't. Also remember that less software is compatible with Linux - it refused to recognise my Canon DSLR forcing me to buy a seperate card reader.

Overall, I would say that this is excellent value for money but remember it is not as easy to use as a full sized laptop.

 "Very nice, ultra-portable laptop" 2008-08-15
By Rat Biker (UK)
This is an excellent little laptop. In fact, "laptop" is maybe not the word - it's almost too small to fit well on my lap. Extremely handy for travelling.

The pre-installed Xandros OS is nicely optimised for boot speed, so it'll be up and running from cold in about 30 seconds. The packaged software's more than enough for office-type use, web browsing, etc.

I have mine set up to dual-boot, using an Xubuntu installation on an SD card. This works nicely with a little tweaking (boot isn't as fast, but you get more choice of free software from the Ubuntu repositories, and the Linux development tools I'm used to). I understand they can also run Windows XP (and possibly Vista), if you're that way inclined.

No real drawbacks I can think of - the small screen, and inevitably limited data storage space, are part of the spec. of such a device, rather than faults. I find it best to use external flash drives for file storage.

"Perhaps my best buy, ever!" 2008-05-17
By B. Tovey (Oxford, UK)
I bought the Eee as a second computer, since my regular laptop is just too heavy to be portable. In contrast, the Eee fits in a large handbag and weighs less than a kilo.

Having configured an advanced desktop as opposed to the more personal-organiser-style interface that is the default, I find that the battery life isn't particularly great - but it's pretty rare to be far from a power source for very long, and the Eee has so many features that make up for this.

The screen seems very small at first if you're used to a normal laptop/desktop, but once you're used to it it's perfectly fine even for web browsing and so on. Equally, you may make more typos than usual for a little while as you get used to the keyboard - but it's a million times easier than texting on a phone, and we're all used to that by now!

The preloaded Linux (Xandros) operating system is very easy to use and configure, even for a lifelong Windows user. In fact, it convinced me to make the switch to Linux on my main computer too. The tools available, such as the OpenOffice suite, are comparable to their mainstream counterparts, and can save into standard file formats such as .doc and .xls. Added to this, the machine has the advantage of far more powerful tools for configuration and programming than is available to the average Windows user, and a little research can help you get more out of your computer than you might ever have imagined. There's a ton of free online documentation for both Linux and the Eee specifically, so you're never alone if anything goes wrong. (Which it hasn't for me so far.)

You'll need some extra storage for your files. The SD card slot in the machine means that you can add a few GB of memory which just sits in the machine, and you can add USB devices if you need to.

This is a fantastic machine, and I have been thankful on so many occasions that I bought it.

 "Fantastic Machine" 2008-02-01

Well you have to able to cope with a small screen and thereby a smaller keyboard, but this is a small price to pay for such a light and quite sturdy device. It is so quick and easy to use that I can rarely be bothered to use my main PC at home anymore, and it is so portable that it is a rare journey when you do not take the notebook with you.

Excellent purchase.

"Compact, Reliable and an all round performer" 2009-09-15
By Mr. D. P. Bates (UK)
For university I needed a pc that would be easy to carry but also had a long enough battery life to sustain me for a day at a time. When I was first pointed in the direction of the ASUS EEE pc I wasnt sure of the type of performance it would be able to give me, but with 160GB of hard drve for the price I thought Id give it a shot.

When recieved within 5 minutes I was surfing the net whilst installing new programs quicker then ever. Also with its battery life performance options means you can set the netbook to perform as quick or slow as you want depending on how much battery life you require. If the load time isnt fast enough you can update the RAM for a 2GB card, easily done (just plug and play, no installation required) and then you will have a netbook as reliable and as fast as any standard laptop or desktop.

I rate this product as 5* as I cannot fault it, the price, size, reliability and all round performance is astonishing.

By C. Day (North Yorks)
I wanted something portable but better than my PDA. This fits the bill ideally. Battery use is as stated, although it gets a little warm - perhaps a bonus in winter when waiting for trains?

Apart from a faster graphics processor not really much to improve on. Does what it's intended for. Links into my LAN no problem, finds WiFi links no problem, loads fast enough for me, has a large hard drive, usb ports for memory sticks and SD slot. Found it recognised a 4Gb SD card whereas a laptop I have didn't.

 "Lovely bit of kit" 2009-09-14
By K. E. Acton (UK)
Very compact piece of equipment that works "straight-out-of-the-box and automatically detected my wi-fi. The battery seems to last nearer 4 hrs than 7 but that's better than most laptops. Apart from not having a DVD/CD unit it is difficult to see how a low spec laptop would be better. MS Works is pre-installed which is useful as is the ASUS automatic bios update programme. The built-in SD Card slot is very useful to review photographs.

A back-up DVD to reload the operating software was enclosed but it would have been helpful if instructions to re-load from a memory stick or external hard drive had been included - ideally to have included a pre-loaded memory stick/SD card instead of a DVD.

A fantastic bit of kit. I fitted a wireless 3 dongle & connect to the web in any hot spot. The computer is very easy to use & has a great collection of software albiet some is only trial. But you may already own your own.

For the money & free delivery its a great deal. With the 7 hour battery life as a bonus this makes this Asus a winner in my book & I am very happy with it.

If you need a bigger monitor then just connect one to it & then you have the benifit of a full spec home P/C but can go walk about with the micro.

This Asus puts the fun back into computing as it does it all with style

"Does what I need it to do" 2009-09-07
By S. J. Muxlow (Nottingham, UK)
Don't get it twisted that this is a powerful laptop, if you think that you need to step away from the computer and go find someone with a brain. This is a little netbook and is ideal for a secondary machine for taking on the train or away with you travelling. As long as you understand this it's mint.

I bought it primarily to use with an application for flashing the ECU on my car, to allow me to store pictures and video files when I'm out and about - keeping my memory cards free for shooting and for when I go away with work or travel so that I can watch films or videos on it, listen to music and surf the net (either via WiFi or a mobile dongle).

So far this little machine has done everything I could ask of it and for what it is it works quickly too. The only gripes I do have is that the battery doesn't last seven hours (but then I never really thought it would...can get about five though which I still think is good) and it needs more RAM (easily upgradable too, google it).

All in all a recommended netbook.

I have been looking for this product for some time to use on my boat for email, navigation and occaisional browsing. I needed Windows XP as my Navigation application doesn't run on Linux which is the OS mainly offered on this product. I installed Windows live mail(Works Great) and My Navigation program also works great with GPS input. I am very satisfied with this purchase as it consumes low power and has no moving parts which is great for use on a sailboat.

I'd like to thank the vendor who was very responsive and delivered the product as advertised

I seem to have quite a few laptops and I only started with one. This is a really neat device and reminds me more of my MacBook than my Wintel machines. The software included is really useful and the icons are so clear - there are some very clever utilities, though Learning Chinese is not one of them !

I am not using this machine for anything more than a travelling WiFi station, but I can see it could do so much more. I wanted SSD for low energy consumption and have a separate HDD for extra capacity. I think this particular Linux 40GB SSD machine is the bee's knees and really a fantastic piece of portable computing - when I think back to the early CompaQ and the Grid...now this ! Wow ! It is really a smooth piece of kit and I would never buy a Windows version - this Linux machine is simply the next best thing to my MacBook

"They should make more of these - asus sets the standard" 2009-09-29
By M. Swemmer
I'm very satisfied with this eeepc. What I like are the combination of small format (9", 1 kg) and the full functionality with the SSD drive. The small keyboard is just big enough, but it does require a short getting used to. The laptop came with Linux, which runs great. However I was forced to reinstall after a failed upgrade which stopped the system from rebooting.

 "Asus 901 with a problem" 2009-07-23
By Dr. T. Wildy (Plymouth, UK)
The kit arrived very promptly, and I was very impressed with the small size and good design.

I have an old Sony Vaio on which I loaded Ubuntu Linux. This was easy to use, and I wrongly assumed the 901's version would be as good.

The 901 worked straight out of the box until I tried to connect to our secure wireless network. My old Sony laptop had linked immediately. Not so the Asus.

Having tried for a month to get it to connect with any secure network, I gave up and sent it back. I have to say that the Asus helpdesk was useless. They did not seem to recognise the 'Pending' problem that I found mentioned on many websites (including their own), together with solutions (none of which seemed to be possible to apply with the device configuration).

I am really disappointed, and if I had the time to learn a new operating system might have persevered, but I do expect kit to work properly and if (as one often finds with Windows) there is a problem or niggle, the it should be easily fixed.

Had the 901 not had this problem I am not sure that its quite limited functionality and storage would have made it worthwhile. SSD technology has yet to produce anything of significant size, and the convergence of standard high-capacity laptops and their move into the netbook world really makes it a bit redundant.

We bought a Dell Inspiron running XP - no problem at all! And a 160Gb drive for very little more. Sorry Asus, you have to do better than that!

By Mr. P. J. Turpin (London, England)
I have to say that I have never participated in a review before and I very seldom complain but I have been hugely disappointed with this product. My web book is based on a linux O.S. I have found the product to be painfully slow in terms of booting up, opening any of the pre-loaded applications, accessing the internet. Yes the product does look sleek. Yes the keys are very small but I was aware that was the case when I bought it and happy to live with this. The netbook constantly crashes as well. If I could send this back for a refund then I would. I would not recommend this product. I thought that maybe there was a fault but according to the technical support team there is not.

By Molly Nicol (London)
ASUS Eee PC 901 W006 Netbook, Linux Preloaded, 1GB RAM, 20GB SSD (Pearl White)

I can only reinforce what others have said, that Linux it is very smooth and easy to run,and this model has very good battery life. I have found it lasted me 5 hours and 20 minutes when skipping between browsing and typing own notes, playing with the webcam, audio recorder, PIM (Personal instant manager), and more. Linux was a pleasant surprise to me, despite what others have written, I am a bit phobic about getting to grips with new technology and programs. After my typical 10 minutes anxt on receiving something new of this nature, and admittedly-receiving help to link with my network, the rest is lovely to work with and explore. I thought I would want to download XP Home, but now don't even want to.

For those who DO want XP, you get more for your money with the Linux version, and XP is compatible, as others have already said, and you will still have considerably more memory left after installing it. The machine itself has a very nice feel and look to it. Sleek, yet solid yet light.

At first glance, the Eee PC looks like a notebook, only smaller, at around half the size of a conventional notebook. Despite its size, it offers rich communication features. The Eee PC can be configured to either display a simple user interface for first-time PC users, or full desktop mode for greater functionality. It is also compatible with Windows XP.

Not only is the Eee PC highly compact, it is also very robust. The solid state disc (SSD) design uses Flash storage that can handle all kinds of shocks and bumps on any journey. It is also very lightweight, at less than 1kg. The Eee PC is hence an excellent travel companion, a powerful, robust and much more reliable information tool that can be deployed freely in the daily environments.

 "Perfect!" 2009-03-12
By John Smith (Powys U.K)
I bought this as a Christmas gift for my daughter. We had seen a similar product at Toys R Us but this model had a bigger memory and had Windows XP loaded.

It has been perfect as a second laptop and met all my daughters needs i.e she was able to access the web and use Windows Messenger! It was really easy to set up too.It is very compact to carry but not so compact that it is annoying to use and generally it looks very stylish. All in all we are very happy with this netbook.

 "On the move solution" 2009-02-08
By Silver Adventurer (Dartmoor, England)
Needed a wireless activated Notebook primarily to help with holiday tasks: management of digital photographs; to use skype to keep in touch, in the privacy of the wireless enabled motel room, with family and friends; and to surf the net for accommodation and activities prior to arrival at the next location. I looked at a number of options and settled on this Asus model, with higher storage, simply because, from previous experience, I now prefer to ere substantially on the higher side of my normal storage estimates. The Notebook performs well. It swiftly activates on switch on: it is microsoft XP based (preloaded), with which I am familar and content, it is easy to use, and the battery life is more than reasonably adequate (and recharge time is good). It came preloaded with other helpful software, including skype (no big deal I know, but it all saves time and energy).

A good decision at the moment and is standing up, well, to be on the road in new zealand.

This product has been delivered and I assume OK. I live overseas and for ordered products which are only deliverable in the UK (why??) I have them sent to my contact there and pick them up on my next visit maybe only a few months later.

thanks

 "MINI MARVEL NETBOOK" 2009-02-07
By Jonathan Annear
Bought for travel and using my Windows programs, this Acer ticks all the boxes. It is robust, light, has a reasonable battery life, adequately fast, a comfortable keyboard for a touch typist and a good screen. Downsides? The 80gb disk is partitioned into two 40gb disks and the screen requires scrolling to view the virtual full screen. Both minor inconveniences. It has not yet failed to make a wireless connection. All in all, a little gem and good value for money.

 "Nice try, buddies" 2009-12-22
By Charles Andrusyszyn
This computer has the exact same hardware as almost the whole eeepc brand, including the wifi n card, thus it's very reliable and efficient.

The SSD is a bit surprising at first, for it has low loading speed, but high writing speed. Not a problem, except when you want to transfer files. The hardware capacity (2 * 16 GB) is OK.

Of course, the battery doesn't last long compared to newer models, but 5 hours is sufficient for using the computer in the transports, which is after all its purpose.

The real surprise comes from the touchpad : it's much more enjoyable than on an eeepc 100X ! It is clearly delimited on the computer, it has plenty of funcions including the "double-finger scrolling", which is VERY VERY useful.

It arrived very quickly (next day) from the suppliers.

 "excellent" 2009-09-06
By G. Reiss (Leeds UK)
I am really impressed with the S101. I installed MSOffice, Trend Anti Virus, Chrome, Irfanview, Axcrypt and various other software tools in the solid state drive and parked my archive files there as well. I use the 16GB SSD card for my work files - documents, spreadsheets, Outlook data files and other stuff including some videos all without any problems. I brought an 8GB USB memory stick for extra storage but I have yet to find a need for it. The S101 sits on my desk hooked up to a full sized screen, keyboard, mouse, printer and scanner most of the time but it is a lightweight joy to unplug and carry off in my briefcase. Even the power supply is light. On the other I have found the eeestorage inoperable so far.

If you want a small smart netbook for emails and websearching this is perfect. Comes with a carry pouch and cloth bag for the power cable - all in a 'gift box'. I bought the chocolate one and as the review said "it's as lickable as a snickers".

 "Netbook" 2009-04-15
By Lesley H (Birmingham UK)
The quality of this netbook is outstanding. It's beautifully engineered and the technical specifications do not do justice to the performance of this small but perfectly designed computer. Prior to purchasing this item I had not uses an Asus product being a long standing fan of Apple laptops. I currently own the new Apple Macbook which is too heavy to be really mobile. I am more than happy to use the Asus laptop as the solution to my mobile needs. Purchase a spare battery if you can and try not to load software you really do not need to use whilst being mobile as the disc space is a little limited.

 "Eeee sy Machine" 2009-10-13
By Mr. Neil D. Hamper (Scotland)
Having read the detailed review in the Financial Times in July 2009, I was pursuaded to purchase the PC. Apart from the small frustration of finding it difficult to use without a mouse, I have had excellent service from this full-blown XP PC.

I have been amazed as to how much this small machine can hold memory and program-wise.

 "Best decision ever" 2009-09-07
By S. Gastal (London, UK)
The Eee PC 1000HE is the best solution if you are looking for a fully functional and affordable netbook. I'm amazed by how light it is. And powerful. And gorgeous. I have a white one. The battery lasts very long. Around 6 hours when I used it for videos and with very bright screen.

"A great asset for the regular traveller" 2009-08-27
By Mr. C. N. Romney (Basingstoke, UK)
The ASUS Netbook is very well designed and 'does exactly what it says on the tin'. Importantly for me, it seems to be very robust - I regularly carry it long distances on a motorbike and haven't had any problems so far. A particularly good feature of this model is the keyboard, which is easy to use and feels just like a full-sized version, unlike many netbooks on the market.

The machine boots up very quickly (about 45 seconds) and, with the Windows XP OS, most people will be very familiar with the interface. The bundled StarOffice software imports MS Office files and allows you to work on them and save them in the original format. Of course, you could load any application SW that you might need as the 160GB HDD has plenty of space. The battery life may not quite match the claims but I've had over 8 hours of use including playing DVDs (external DVD drive needed), surfing the net and editing documents and spreadsheets. I can't say how good it is at running processor-heavy games and I haven't tried the built-in camera yet.

Overall, if you need a compact, light machine for business or leisure trips then this deserves your serious attention.

"Perfect as a travel computer" 2009-08-25

This netbook will fit in most holiday resort safes so it is ideal for taking on your holiday. Add a 3G stick and you have access to the WWW from anywhere you can use a mobile phone, for up to 9 hours. All I need now is a printer to match.
