This is a good little computer, which I needed for storing office files and saves me carrying a very heavy file around. I don't use it on the internet. I loaded Office 2003 on a spare SD 8gb card and it runs quite well. Occasionally the computer freezes, but so does my PC! The keyboard is not of standard dimensions, but I don't find it too much of a problem (I have small fingers). The battery discharges when not in use for some time, so I have to remember to charge it up before use. However the small, light charger is not a burden to carry with the computer, and the cable is long enough to reach to a power point in normal use. The mouse enclosed is not very efficient. I'm glad Windows XP is still current for these small machines, as I much prefer it to Vista. Although I'm more concerned about performance than appearance, I must say I do like the pearlised white finish of this machine and it has attracted some admiring comments.

Just taken delivery of the Asus Eee PC 900 [purple - looks more pink than purple!]. Unpacked the device, it was already charged, and I was surfing the internet in under 3 minutes - very impressive!!
My device runs on Linux which looks and feels different to windows [which must be good] it takes a little getting used to but it is worth it. Have not found anything the device cannot do that I want it to - yet.
Only problem is the poor battery life. The PC shipped with a 4400mAh battery which only gave me max 1 hour 15 minutes, so I invested in a 10000mAh battery which gives 4 to 5 hours of life.
Verdict - if you want a machine to access the internet, do some word and spreadsheet stuff and is very portable you can't beat this one - but you will need to invest in a long life battery!

My wifes lap died suddenly and after research decided on the Asus Eee900 Linux machine as a replacement. In true Amazon style it arrived the following day.I spent three hours trying to get the device talking to the internet, with a message Pending constantly displayed, but no connection. I went online for help, Asus, forums etc. It turns out from th views of hundreds of other users Linux can either work perfectly out of the box, or be a nightmare, I had the nightmare version and had to return the unit for a dreaded windows version which works fine.

This is a great little thing. I initially bought one for myself and then my wife took it off me. so now she's got this one and we don't talk to each other.
The keys are big enough for my fat fingers, memory is fine, you just need to delete old big files like watched films, linux is easy to use as long as you don't like piddling about with a computers guts in which case you need to be a little bit more technical, it starts up and online in under two minutes, it looks cool, and is really light. battery lasts up to about 3 hours. seems fairly indestructible.

This pc is fab. I got it as a second laptop for browsing the internet etc as my boyfriend has taken over my main laptop for his gaming! It's quick to start up & does everything I need it to basically. I am glad however that I payed extra for windows as when I need to I can bring my work home or just as easily fecth my eee pc to work inc. excl & word. I personally don't need much storage on my computer & for my general useage it runs perfectly fine but I can see how it can be a little small for some. Overall worth evey penny.

I bought this machine for my wife to use as a browser/emailer and in that respect it is fantastic and she luurrrrves it!
However, although it is very pretty and ultra portable device it does have a MAJOR drawback and that is the hard drive. Really I should say "lack" of because, of course, this machine uses solid-state or "flash" memory instead of traditional HDDs. When I decided to buy this model it was one of the main reasons I chose it - faster boot speed, less battery use, etc.
But when it arrived the fist thing I noticed was the partitions - the drive is marketed as 12GB in reality it is two drives, one 4GB (faster) system drive and a second (slower i.e. cheaper) 8GB drive. With windows XP installed on the smaller partition it is almost impossible run the machine successfully. After all the required updates and service packs installed the system drive bloats to over 3GB.
I tried various things to free up space. I had to uninstall most of the proprietary software to get a reasonable performance from it. Don't even try and move profiles or temp files to the D: drive as this only slows things down even more. Because of the flash drive the system does not rely on a swap file, this doesn't seem to matter too much until you get down to only a few hundred meg.
At one point my drive C: only had 87meg left at which point I gave up and reformatted the thing. Don't even think about installing other software on it - especially anything like MS office, it will just grind to a halt.
Having said all the above I have to admit that my wife loves it and it is indeed a great little machine. To get the most from it I would recommend the following:
- Uninstall everything you don't need.
- Don't install office!
- Don't use it to replace your laptop.
- Buy and external CD/DVD drive. Such as: Slimline USB External CDRW DVDROM Drive
Just one other thing... The battery life is phenomenal, we get 5-7 hours of one charge.

However, the keyboard just broke after only 5 months of casual so I'm downgrading my review to 3 stars. Hopefully Amazon will refund me so that I can buy a better replacement for my wife.

I am so impressed with this netbook. Everything about it is perfect. The 11.6 inch screen is far larger than I expected, Windows 7 runs very smoothly, and i'm finding more and more with this netbook that its the little features that im falling in love with. For example, Theres an SD camera card slot on the side! This is perfect for me being a photography student.
Overall, I highly reccomend this netbook. :)

I bought this item just as soon as it was available with Windows 7. It is so stylish that I could forgive it much but I don't have to. The screen is the biggest I've seen on a Netbook and has excellant resolution and good viewing angle. The keyboard is positive and a dream to use. I have never liked the touchpads usual on these devices but found this one pretty good. Still I spent a fiver on a tiny netbook mouse from Morrisons and that matches the styling so well.
On the downside it is expensive so imagine my suprise when it came without an inbuilt bluetooth. That despite the very strong impression given by the manufacturers description that it did have one. Apparently some models come with it and some don't. Amazon are so useless with this type of complaint that it is not worth trying. Just how do you tell them they published a misleading description. A Netbook without bluetooth is pretty stupid, though. Buying a micro bluetooth usb device is easy and quite cheap at around a tenner but that takes up one of the 3 usb slots virtually permanantly. Bad show Asus/Amazon.
Apart from that I do like my netbook and expect to be a happy user for a long time to come.

This product has brought me hours of joy and been reasonibly funtional. However,before buying this product I would be absolutely clear what you want you intend to use it for.
This product will:
Let you surf the web
Stream music and video
Type up documents or do spreadsheets etc.
It will also fit into a normal sized handbag or backpack along with your other day to day bits.
If this is all you intend to use it for then dont worry, go a head and buy it.
The 2g Surf will not however:
Allow you to store very much on its miniature 2 gigabyte SSD hard drive. Most of this drive is taken up with the operating system itself
It is unsuitable to play most modern games the graphics card and screen are mostly inadequate
Network File sharing using the out of the box operating system. It is possible to either install a different operating system (linux distribution or windows) or another applications to achieve this.
Install or play anyting from a CD or DVD, it has no optical disk drive. Although you can install things from the internet, an SD card or a USB drive.
I mostly used this machine to type up my revision notes, and I now use it to try out different operating systems.
At the current price it is perhaps overpriced, and for the same money it is possible to get a much better model.

When I recieved the item it was ready to go with everything pre installed. It boots up very quickly from off and super fast from hibernate, very impressed with the quality and for such an amazing price!

Ive had this netbook for about a week now and i can definatly say it was well worth my investment. If your sceptical about the speed at which it runs, dont be. When it was out the box (after setup) it booted windows in about 40 secconds. Not lightning fast, but thats pretty good considering whats inside it. And after a week of use and installing and uninstalling, it still boots in 40. So far so good.
Didnt need any aditional drivers for my USB CD/DVD writer drive, which was good.
The system comes prepackeged with some Asus programs...
ECAP, which is for the webcam, it offers a picture capture, which saves it as a .bmp to the my docs folder, and also a video capture, which saves in .wmv. Solid program, but not much else to it.
Open Office, exceptionally good rip off of Microsoft office. If your used to office 2003 >, and dont want to resort to piracy or shelling out, then this is for you. It also has works if you refuse to use it.
Eee Storage, which i havent used, but it does allow you to download some dodgy rip off games for free for both the linux and windows version.

Of course the best webbrowser out there!
The Screen,
the size doesnt bother me at all, since its usually right infront of me on my desks at school. People say its grainy, which actually it isnt. Its like it has a film ontop of it, which you want to peal off, BUT that feeling wares off once youve used it for about 2 minutes and start using it. I will agree that this 'grain' shows up more on solid colours (so in word with the white background).
Speakers
they are mounted either side of laptop, and they are REALLY loud. They dont quite drown out my other laptop, but pack a punch for their size. They sound pretty good too, they arnt too tinny like other small speakers. (just dont close the screen, then it sounds bad)
Performance,
For that reason, any fine image editing is probably best left to another computer, however i have installed Photoshop CS2 and it works just as it does on all my other computers, FAST and Smoothly.
Older games run great too, such as Unreal Tornement, Worms 2, BIG red racing, Terminal Velocity (provided you know how to use dosbox)
Ive seen videos of GTA III running too, but havent tested it myself.
Video seems to run smoothly in windows media player, but you might find yourself turning down the quality on flash applications to run video online (youtube).
Hard Drive
Its an 80 gig which has been partioned, one 40gb, and the remaining 36ish. Im sure if your that bothered you could redo it, but i like the ways its done. System stuff one side, Media stuff the other. (keeps it squeeky clean)
Mouse
the mouse pad is actually a multitouch, similar to the iphone, useful for zooming in on pictures by 'pinching'.
Battery Life
Its outstanding, ive never had a battery last so long. I use mine for at school, everyday ive brought my charger in, and i havent actually plugged it in at school once. I use it in each lesson for about 45 mins, (writing word documents). thats about 3 hours, then i use it for about another hour/ hour and half before i get home, before plugging it in.
With the brightness right down, camera + wireless diisabled, on power saver mode, it says ive got about 5:30 hours. With the brightness in the middle it says about 4:30, and about 3:40 with brightness on max. To be honest though, i cant really see much difference between full and half though.
The battery does take a while to charge, not sure why though.
Weight
It looks like it would weigh nothing, and it doesnt. It weights about the same as a stack of 100 cdrs.
OVERALL
Im really glad i bought this, its got a long battery, and does what i need, games, firefox and word :). For a student this is perfect. For a trip abroad this is good too. Its light, and you wont be charging it every 10 mins. Great for flights. Theres a reset button on the bottom too. (just incase)
i cant complain about it since it was only a little more than 200 quid. Its great for what your paying, and more.

Like Tom below, I bought this little gem to replace my now late desktop PC. I purchased it from Amazon, I see that now it's not available from them, anyhow it arrived promptly, started up fast and is a joy to use. I'm not great with touchpads in general, but this one is really easy to use, it will do just fine. Now I managed to get the battery icon onto my taskbar ( it's giving me about 4 hours on full blast), I'm a happy bunny and looking forward using this little one for all my internet needs.

Just bought the EEE PC904 HD in white. What a fantastic device! I was looking for something to replace my old Psion organiser (mini pc style) which died a while back. I had software to sync this with windows and it was useful to carry around my dates, schedules, word and excel files. I looked at several PDAs but came around to the idea of a netbook style PC.
For compatibility with windows, I went for the ASUS EEE PC904 with 80G hard drive. It comes with Win XP home and MS Works preloaded. It has anti virrus pre-installed, a web cam and mic array with a mini web video creation package. Win XP was at SP3 level but I have updated the IE browser to V.7. plus other win updates are rolling in.
The device also has 3 USB ports, headphone and mic sockets, VGA, Ethernet and a security lock socket plus an SD card socket (and power inlet jack).
This is such a useful device, it gives you the power of a small PC in something just a bit bigger than an A5 notepad. Even though it is not a speedster, performance is very good. As a bonus, ASUS warranty is 2 years on this device (at the time of writing)
A memory stick is a useful addition as to is a mouse or trackball although the built-in touchpad is quite functional. If you don't already have one, a USB CD/DVD drive should also be on your shopping list.
For around £250 for a PC with pre-installed Windows XP OS plus MS works and other packages, this is a fantastic bit of kit that is ready for work as soon as you get it out of the box! Well done ASUS.

Here is my view of the 904. Firstly I felt I should say the Supersaver free delivery option was excellent, arrived within the 3 day window.
So on to the 904. The first thing that hits you when you open the box is what you get.. a really nice `zipped' slip cover Eee PC embossed, lovely little charger, and a really nice touch, a cleaning cloth, together with a good paperback user manual and recovery disk.
The second thing is the 904 itself. I was really surprised just how well built it is, the glossy white plastic is of a very good quality, as is the keyboard and trackpad. It is in my opinion in a different leaque to my partners MSI Wind clone in this respect.
Firing it up, again another surprise, just how quick it is, especially as the cpu is only 900 MHz. The HDD obviously playing its part here.
The same speed is shown online, the inbuilt wifi appears very quick.
The 8.9 screen, is perfectly adequate, even for myself (I use reading glasses), as the case is the same as Eee PC 1000 10.0 screen a bezel is used to good effect by housing the speakers.
Sound although not that loud is nice and clear, with no anoying buzzing at full volume, which is a plus.
The best bit though is the battery life, at the moment (new battery), I am getting 5 hours! although not as good as the 901 or 1000, I am more than happy!
To acheive this, you need to set xp power options to `max battery' set Asus super hybrid utility to power saving, then take screen brightness to zero (Fn + F5).
Finally in Control Panel > System > Advanced > Settings > Visual Settings, make sure A) `adjust for best porformance' is selected, then apply, and B) again in Visual Settings scroll to bottom of list and select `Use visual styles on windows and buttons' to restore xp `look'.
All in all a great netbook.

As a netbook it is ok, but you're better off holding out a month for the 12 inch screen version which is easier to use for anything other than surfing the web or playing music.
The "suggested" RAM option is a total waste of money. Firstly, installing it invalidates the warranty on the netbook. Secondly, the upgrade is EXTREMELY difficult and very error prone. It's quite likely the netbook will never work again if you try the upgrade, unless you're an electronics engineer.

I absolutely love the item. It is very userfriendly and portable. The 10.5 hour battery life is the absolute truth. I've found it very easy to adapt to the keyboard from a conventional PC keyboard at work and 'conventional' laptop keyboard at home.
the plug and play is very good, i plugged in a mini mouse and a seperate keypad today and the netbook instantly installed the drivers to operate both of these devices.
and as the title says, it is letting my type this review. I do however suggest the purchase of a DVD/CD drive which can be connected by USB cable.

This is my first netbook, although I had a HP Pavillion DV6095EA laptop.
First impressions are very good, it is much smaller than the pictures make out to be. Runs pretty fast, although im only using this to take into uni, so only have firefox, office 2007 ultimate, foobar2000, vlc media player & acrobat reader installed.
It seems of very good quality, although it is glossy so get used to fingerprints! The keypad, although not as spaced out as a pc keyboard, is very easy to get used to, only took me a few hours to start writing my assignments with speed and ease. The indiviual keys are pretty big which was a nice surpise.
The battery life is excellent, and the main reason why I bought this model. Ive used it pretty much every day for two weeks with bluetooth and wifi, surfing the net, listening to music and using office, and only had it plugged in 3 or 4 times. Turn the screen brightness down low and with wifi/bluetooth off, it showed just under 11 hours of battery left when listening to music! Also, the battery is removable, unlike the 1008HA (which means you wont have to send it back to Asus and probably pay an extortionate rate to replace the battery).
Connected it to a full 1920 by 1080p screen which was fine (but only when its plugged in). It doesnt allow dual screen though, only mirrored, which i assume is due to windows 7 starter. You also get 500gb of online storage with asus.
The main downfall is actually windows 7, as it is the starter version. You get pretty much nothing, cant even change the wallpaper! I believe that the starter version is tailored for netbooks, but why you cant change the wallpaper is beyond me. Also doesnt like ejecting my usb stick which uses U3 software. Using windows 7 is pretty easy though, easy to get used to, and doesnt take that long to load. Loads quicker than my pc on XP pro and 3Ghz processor.
All in all though, I would definately recommend this netbook. You may want to upgrade the windows 7 version and ram (i havent needed as of yet because i dont use power hungry programs, use the pc for that). In terms of quality, cost, portability, ergonomics, specs and looks, its excellent. The only ways i would improve it are probably make the webcam better (its only 0.3mp) and included a HDMI port like the dells (but their battery life is no where near as good), but it still gets 5 stars.

This is my third Asus netbook - and the best. I started with the 701, traded up to the 901 and now I have given the 901 (also a great machine) to my partner because my head was turned by this Seashell model. I agonised over whether to get this 1008 or the 1005 (with the better battery life, user upgradeable memory & battery). I'm pleased with my decision to go with this one - the covered ports are a bit of a fiddle, and I do worry a bit about the battery dying. But the battery life is good, the slimmer case and lighter weight of this model really suits me. I have had 1Kg as my breakpoint in laptop weight ever since I had my first small laptop, a Sharp 1100, and I find the advantage of portability outweighs everything else for me.
The Windows 7 Starter Edition is also great - I thought I'd need to upgrade immediately (I have a full copy I bought) but I haven't bothered. The Asus utility that allows altering the desktop wallpaper deals with that limitation and the others haven't bothered me so for. I do wonder whether I will hit the need for XP Mode down the line, and whether Media Center would have been nice to play recordings from my computer/TV in native format - but the lack of the Aero stuff hasn't mattered at all.
All in all - a great machine, the best Asus yet. Oh & I also anguished over whether to buy burgundy or blue. I haven't seen the blue but this burgundy is fantastic - very classy. It is a graduated tint, moving to almost black towards the back of the machine (ie the hinge area). I am female and the colour works in both professional and leisure context.
I am a happy purchaser.

This item was not what was expected as I thought I had purchased a regular laptop. At first I was disappointed but apart from having to purchase separate a separate CDRom player before I could load any software and mouse (optional) I am now really pleased with it, its so neat and the keyboard is excellent. I would recommend this netbook to all, but when selling you could note extra items, i.e. external CD Rom player.

It's a very neat, pretty little netbook, infact im using it to type this review! It's very fast and i would certainly recomend it. Windows 7 is working very good and setup went just fine, unlike one of the reviews pointing out a blue screen of death. Although it says batteries are required they do as a matter of fact come with it. Im very please i bought this, it is working fine, Microsoft Works is just as good as Microsoft Office and it has a nice webcam. It has good internet connection, and to everybody reading this now i would certainly recommend you buy it. Great netbook; Great price - thank you Amazon!

Would not complete set-up.When it appeared to have set-up, downloaded windows updates and got the blue screen of death on restart. That was it.Could not recover because no disc drive in notebooks although a CD is included in the package.
For the novice I would have liked the notebook already set up. Would have liked more information on limits of notebooks and more information on the limits of Windows 7 Starter. So this type of notebook with Windows 7 was not for me and not fit for my purpose. No choice but to return.

Bought to supplement our desktop PC so we could have a mobile computing facility when away from home. Super portable, well constructed with a nice practical and aesthetic design. Good storage capacity with 250Gb hard drive and quick to load with Win 7... we are satisfied with Starter edition, despite running Home Premium on desktop... it still meets our needs. Packaged software included MS Works, but we have also installed MS Office Home and Student 2007 as well. We have decided to use MS Security Essentials instead of trial Anti-virus package pre-installed. Finally, have installed updated Windows Live Essentials as well. Will probably use Vodafone Pay As You Go USB stick for online access away from home, otherwise wireless facility quick and easy to use. Will probably update RAM to 2Gb in due course to maximise performance available. Good buy at competitive price... but would have liked protective carry case to have been included in sale.
